I'm posting from work again because I apparently have offended some minor deity. This isn't THE GOD per se, but definitely someone on the level of Ahura Mazda or Quetzalcoatl. I know this because today, somewhere between being on the phone for 2 hours discussing a Charitable Remainder Trust (hereafter "WGF" for "who gives a fuck?") with Scott, my PA, and realizing that I had to go to the bathroom 3.2 minutes into said marathon conference call my head either exploded or I attained enlightenment. I would like to take this time to discuss the nature of my cranial fireworks and perhaps offer a sacrifice of one (1) Pat Buchanan to Lord Wisdom or the Feathered Serpent. My tortured bladder and pre-columbian bird gods aside, I have to register my profound disappointment with the far right of the Republican Party. For almost a quarter of a century the Republican Party faithful have lied in wait while the gears of time slowly turned in our favor. When Justice Sandra Day O'Conner decided to throw in the towel the collective gasp of pleasure could be heard from Bill Kristol's office to Anne Coulter's knickers. This was it, this was our opportunity to permanently win the culture war that has raged in this country since Elvis started making teenagers horny. After 25 years of sitting precariously on the edge of a 5-4 majority in stepped John Roberts to the collective 'que?' of the establishment. He turned out to be a Strict-Constructionist, obviously legally brilliant, AND kicked the shit out of Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden in the hearings which is ALWAYS good for the conservative soul. He's the new chief, we can all give a great Mad Money Cramer "BOOYAH!" with this one. Then came the nomination of Harriet Miers. This is where the far right of the party proved beyond a shadow of any doubt that they were not interested in strict interpretation of the constitution, that they were, in effect, not true conservatives.
(Before I go any further I would like to observe that the debate between a 'living constitution' and strict constructionism can be traced back to the nascent stages of our constitution, you can see the thoughts justifying BOTH approaches weave in and out of the writings of James Madison and Alexander Hamilton. Both arguments are legally and philosophically valid. The federalist and the anti-federalist papers, especially #'s 11 and 51 on judiciary and on faction prove that the founders had in mind not only a government beholden to unalterable rules but one of shifting coalitions and responsiveness as a hallmark of self governance. The fact that we are still debating this today is a testament to the intellectual richness that predated the founding, drawing upon giants such as Locke, Rousseau, Hobbes and others to satisfy the reason and function of human liberty.)
That said I was horribly disappointed when conservative pundits (including some whom I have great respect for) such as Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer came out against Harriet Miers. I was even further disappointed when Sen. Trent Lott and Sen. Sam Brownback both stated that they could not commit to voting for the nominee until they had learned about her stance on several issues which were important to their respective constituencies...OF ALL THE HYPOCRITICAL HORSESHIT! This is exactly what the Republican Party lambasted people like Sen. Barbara Boxer and Sen. Chuck Schumer for, and now we go and do the same crap. The whole point is to have a strict constructionist jurist on the bench because you believe in the legal philosophy, not to sacrifice your entire political credibility on the altar of Roe v. Wade. They wanted a fight, they wanted a bare-knuckle brawl on the floor of the Senate on abortion, school prayer, evolution, and the establishment clause. Instead of quietly accepting that Miers was a born again christian whose limited public trail does nothing buy reinforce her conservative credentials they whined and cried because the President denied them their fight. What babies. My counsel to the right wing of my beloved Republican party is this....learn when to shut your freakin' mouth. GOSH! IDIOTS!

What an appropriate verb choice.
Politics gives me a headache. I don't trust a single politician, and I don't have the energy to sort out which ones are most likely to further the causes with which I agree while doing minimal damage.
